A Description of Our Processes

Sand Casting for Aluminum, Brass, and Bronze

Sand casting (also known as sand molded casting) is a metal casting process using sand as the mold material. Over 70% of all metal castings are produced using a sand casting process. Here are six steps involved:

1. Form sand around a pattern to create a mold.

2. Incorporate the pattern and sand in a gating system.

3. Remove the pattern.

4. Fill the mold cavity with molten metal.

5. Allow the metal to cool.

6. Break away the sand mold and remove the casting.

Cores

A core is a device used in casting and molding processes to produce internal cavities and re-entrant angles. The core is normally disposable and is destroyed to get it out of the piece. We use three types of cores: Green Sand, Shell, and C02.

Permanent Mold

For large production runs it is often advantageous and cost effective to use a permanent mold process. Permanent mold casting employs reusable molds usually made from cast iron. In a gravity process the two halves of the mold are heated to a temperature adequate to ease material flow and reduce thermal damage to the casting. The mold cavity is then coated with a wash which prevents the casting from sticking to the mold and also prolongs the mold life. Advantages of permanent molds are a good surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

Heat Treating

Heat treating can be very important for certain products. It involves heating or chilling, usually to extreme temperatures, to harden or soften a material. Heat treatment techniques include annealing, case hardening, precipitation strengthening, tempering and quenching. We have heating treating equipment on site and can meet your needs.

Machining

For any required machining we have several quality machine shops at our disposal at reasonable prices. We provide the pick-up and delivery.
